Main Street Improvements in Place

City crews have re-striped and re-marked Main Street in line with the Main Street Improvement Plan outlined earlier this year. Go on out and take a walk on the street or park in front of your favorite store and see how it feels! Is traffic moving slower? Do you feel safer on the sidewalk? Are motorists following posted signs and striping? Please let us know.

We Need Help Pulling Weeds at the Garden, 8/18 or 8/19, 5:30pm

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We need volunteers to help us weed the West Bluff Community Garden. With all the wet and humid weather this season, the weeds in the Garden have too strong a hold ! Please come out and help us do battle. With 10-12 volunteers we could accomplish alot in one night (even more in two nights). Icy pops for everyone who helps out!

Who: anyone who can spare an hour
What: weeding in the garden
Where: West Bluff Community Garden (Western Ave just south of Laura; enter from alley)
When: Wednesday, August 18 OR Thursday, August 19 from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

75 lbs of Tomatoes Harvested so Far

It’s been a tough growing season, but the West Bluff Community Garden has harvested over 75 lbs of tomatoes so far. We’ll keep picking probably through mid-September depending on the weather and the plants. All produce has been donated to West Mark Food Pantry on Moss Ave., the South Side Mission and a bit to St. Anne’s church. Thank you to our hard-working garden volunteers including Linda, George, and Greg in particular!

50 lbs of Greens Harvested Already from WB Community Garden

Greetings Garden Friends,

Harvest News: We harvested a big crop of greens — spinach, lettuces and a few peas — on Sunday. Thanks to all who made it to the garden with short notice. By Sunday afternoon the greens (approx. 50 lbs!) were in the fridge at WestMark Food Pantry and yesterday morning they were in the hands of hungry neighbors – local, organic, healthy greens, grown from seed by all of you. Thank you!!!

As I mentioned in my last note, we have a large amount of seedlings to get in the ground. Unfortuntately, it doesn’t look like the

weather is going to cooperate tonight so let’s plan for a Wednesday night planting festival. If you can be there tomorrow night, please

consider yourself warmly invited. The plan is to finish getting the tomatoes into the big garden and get some peppers etc into the ground where we just pulled out the lettuce and spinach. We have a big need for people who like to dig, plant, weed and mulch. If any of those catch your fancy, come on out for some stress-relieving exercise and meet some neighbors too.

Hope to see you all tomorrow night. Children welcome.

This Week at West Bluff Community Garden - 6/1/2010

Dear Garden Friends,

With all the rain from yesterday, let’s plan to meet on Wednesday this week, at 5:30pm.

Thanks for all the help and support last week — we made some great progress with the fence around the big garden and we got the three rows of tomatoes staked up and they are looking better already. With all this sunshine, heat and rain, we are in good shape.

If you have some time to come on by and do some weeding, we sure could use it. If you’ve been coming by on your own, please keep it up.

We do have a need for some spare plants — if you have some things you can share with the garden, please let me know. I’m working on

some additional plant donations to get the gardens filled up.

This Week at West Bluff Community Garden — Let’s meet Wednesday 5/26 instead of Tuesday (tonight)

Hello Garden Friends,

A few items:

Lisa Ferolo has been diligently working on the fenceposts and they will be in on Wednesday (tomorrow night - 5/26). If we could get some helpers who are willing to pound in some fenceposts, that would be fantastic (bring hammer/sledge!). If you think of it, please also bring some pliers to bend the fence ends into shape.

Also, I have some sturdy T-posts for staking up the tomatoes. Perhaps we can install those in the big garden tomorrow night too?

I am working on getting some additional plants for the big garden, if we get those in time, we’ll plan on some planting tomorrow.

If anyone is available for weeding but can’t make the specific garden times, the smaller garden could use some periodic weeding — we have a lot of volunteer tomatoes and some volunteer sunflowers. We got a lot of them out of the smaller garden last week, but if you like to weed and have some time over the next few weeks, please stop by whenever you can and pull some weeds. Now that the weather is warm and we’re getting a lot of sun and rain, things are really starting to grow!

My back has ben bothering me so I am not personally up for installing fence by myself. If you can make it out tomorrow night, please reply to this email to let me know if you can be there.

We also could use some folks to lay down some newspaper and straw around the tomatoes that are in the ground. If you’re not up for fencing, there is plenty of other work too! Everyone welcome!
